IMG_4641.jpgDr. John M. Asthalter graduated from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic at Southern California University of Health Sciences in 2006. He brings a wealth of life experience to his practice. His undergraduate studies started in biology and the life sciences at Mitchell College in New London CT. It was there that he discovered that his desire to learn about marine life was superseded by his interest in the ships themselves. He Attended the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Scuhyler. While there he continued to pursue his interest in yacht racing. He was given the command of two racing yachts while there, The yacht Blaze a Carter 39' and the yacht Climax, a heritage 1 ton. This also gave him the opportunity to try out for the America's Cup yacht Freedom. He made that team as well as the Heart of America team four years later.  After a few years as a yacht captain he took a permanent position with Texaco as a Third Mate on board their oil tankers. He sailed with Texaco until 1994 obtaining his 1600 ton Masters / unlimited tonnage chief mate license. At Texaco he met his wife who was employed in the same capacity. He and his wife Mackey built a custom log home towards the end of his shipping career. This began his second career as a general contractor/ carpenter. From 1989 on he has been teaching skiing at Breckenridge Ski Resort. He began taking he prerequisite courses for Chiropractic school in 1999. He received his EMT- IV certification in 2000. He began Chiropractic school in January of 2003 and Graduated on the Deans list in April of 2006.  While in California he worked at the LA Free Clinic and the City of Angels Free Clinic providing chiropractic care to the city’s under served population. He also worked at the Cal State LA campus Health Center providing care to the students and faculty there. At Cal State LA and at Pasadena City College he was given the opportunity to work at the athletic training centers treating athletes from the track and field, baseball, basketball and volley ball teams.

Dr. Johns most rewarding work experience while in California was being chosen to work at the AIDS LifeCycle fund raising ride. This ride is from San Francisco to Los Angeles encompassing 700 miles in 7 days. Almost 5000 riders participate annually. Working in the Chiropractic/ Sports Medicine tent we would treat riders and crew from 5:30 am to 8:30 am and from 1:30 to 10:30 pm, seeing an average of 100 riders per provider per day.

Dr. Asthalter brings Active Release Technique to Summit County. It is a highly effective treatment for injuries to the soft tissues of the body. While in his second trimester at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic he attended a lecture given by an alumnus who spoke about treating soft tissue injuries with a technique called Active Release Technique (ART). His explanation of the healing process and how it could be facilitated with the use of this technique struck a chord. He started taking additional courses in ART in addition to his regular course work, allowing him to become certified in ART while still in school. The technique requires a developed sense of touch and he believes that he will be better able to serve his patients here in the county because of those three years of experience. He is the only provider of ART in the county and looks forward to educating the public in what ART can do for them.

Dr. John is also trained in Trigenics Myoneural Medicine (myo-muscule, neuro-nerve). He trained  directly with the Trigenics  developer  Dr. Allan Oolo Austin. This technique is a neurologically based soft tissue assessment and manipulative treatment system that symbiotically combines 1. Autogenics (controlled breathing with biofeedback), 2. Myogenics(meridian muscle manipulation) 3. Neurogenics (reflex neurology). By using this technique Dr. Asthalter is able to help the body and brain communicate more effectively and thereby function at a higher level.

Dr. John is also trained in Integrative Neuromuscular Acupoint System. This system of acupuncture was developed by Dr. Yun-Tao Ma  Director of the Biomedical Acupunture Institute. This system is a highly effective treatment for the management of pain and the maintenance of the body’s homeostatic balance. Dr.Asthalter did his training with Dr. Ma at the Biomedical Acupuncture Institute. Dr. Asthalter and Dr. Waerlop  of Summit Chiropractic and Rehabilitation are the only practitioners of  the INMAS protocol in Summit County.
