We are not sure about the side effects of mangosteen and whether mangosteen extracts will interact with certain medications. There is research on the xanthones in other plants.
Xanthones may interfere with normal blood-clotting. It's not known whether mangosteen xanthones may interact with blood-thinning medication such as Warfarin or Coumadin and possibly lead to bleeding. If you take blood thinners, consult with your physician before beginning Mangosteen supplementation.
In clinical studies, high doses of xanthones act as central nervous system depressants (it is in the same family as St Johns Wort ). They may cause excess sedation when combined with other herbs or medication, and it could be potentialy toxic at higher doses. Xanthones have been found to inhibit serotonin-receptor binding and inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO). One study found that mangosteen xanthones may also have these effects on serotonin.
